IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA
Julian Kim’s final Figaro of 2016 brought him to the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, where he performed in Damiano Michieletto’s inventive staging of Il barbiere di Siviglia. Though the official page now features images from the 2017 revival — where Kim did not appear — contemporary reviews from the 2016 production highlighted his growing command of the role. By this fourth engagement, Kim’s Figaro had matured into a charismatic, agile, and thoroughly likable character. Critics praised his bright, expansive timbre and ringing high notes, particularly in his entrance aria, which received prolonged applause. His stage presence was confident and humorous, marked by expressive diction and near-perfect Italian pronunciation. His combination of vocal clarity, charm, and confident musical phrasing left a vivid impression on the audience — especially in a packed courtyard at Palazzo Pitti, where ovations for his performance were among the most enthusiastic of the night.
