IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA

Julian Kim returned to the role of Figaro at Teatro La Fenice in 2016, performing in the theater’s traditional production directed by Bepi Morassi. As his third Figaro of the year, the engagement underscored his rising stature on the Italian operatic scene. In this classic staging, Kim delivered a performance full of energy and assurance, navigating Rossini’s comic pacing and linguistic demands with impressive ease. Rather than following the trend toward lighter-voiced Figaros, Kim’s interpretation drew comparisons to the great Leo Nucci, offering a rich, full-bodied sound anchored in vocal strength and dramatic conviction — a portrayal both grounded in tradition and marked by his own artistry.

"Julian Kim, in the role of Figaro, truly commanded the stage. It is not easy for an East Asian singer to find the right balance, especially in Rossini’s comic repertoire, which requires exceptional attention to diction, particularly in the recitatives. Yet, Kim was formidable and displayed the verve of a true factotum. Lately, we often hear Figaros with lighter voices, which have a less full-bodied timbre but greater ease in agility. The Korean baritone, however, follows in the footsteps of Nucci, shaping a protagonist who is vocally unshaken by the challenges of the high tessitura and puts his powerful, masterfully controlled voice at the service of the coloratura."
