Opera Performance Summary, Reviews & Media

2015

LA BOHÈME

Julian Kim returned to the role of Marcello at Terme di Caracalla in Rome for a second consecutive year. While the 2014 production unfolded amid internal turmoil at the opera house, which dominated press coverage at the time, the 2015 staging was notably more cohesive. Conducted by Paolo Arrivabeni and once again directed by Davide Livermore, the production featured LED panels arranged at dynamic angles, displaying Impressionist-inspired imagery that echoed Marcello’s brushwork and enhanced the emotional atmosphere of each scene. With greater focus on the artistic quality of the performance in 2015, Julian Kim’s Marcello received warm praise. Reviewers noted a clear evolution from the previous year, emphasizing his consistently powerful and musical voice, as well as more refined phrasing and expressive acting. His portrayal matured from that of a strong vocalist to a fully realized interpreter comfortably inhabiting the role.

"Marcello seems to be our official guide through this end of the century. Like Cézanne, he reveals the world to our gaze. Like Gauguin and Van Gogh, he brings out the colors from an underlying drama. Like Pisarro, he seeks the inspiration of a new art in the revolutionary ideas of this end of the century. His energy seems to spread to his companions and translates into a beautiful group synergy. The impressionist paintings that he paints on the digital screen of his easel are projected onto the canvas placed at the back of the scene.

On the other hand, the male voices do not offer us anything remarkable with the exception of Julian Kim's Marcello whose presence compensates for the lack of vocal charisma of the men in this Bohème."

RECONDITE ARMONIE

"Julian Kim offers a commendable Marcello vocally: his voice is quite full and rounded. He phrases with ease, showing a good command of the language – thanks to his studies and Italian masterclasses."

L’Ape musicale

"Julian Kim 's Marcello improved from the already good one of last season: the voice is always powerful and used with musicality, while the phrasing and acting became more interesting, making an already good singer a true interpreter at ease in the role of the character."
