LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR
The scenography features a large crumpled parchment that runs along the wall of the stage, revealing, hiding, and reflecting characters and actions. The "psychoplastic" fabric (a term coined by Josef Svoboda to describe the canvas with the dual property of reflecting projected images and allowing characters to shine through) unfolds into mountains, clouds, sea—an imaginary shroud that envelops Lucia’s descent into madness. Compared to earlier editions, this staging includes new costumes, updated lighting, and a direction that is, as director Henning Brockhaus notes, “less realistic and more poetic and dreamlike,” designed to fully capture the psychological complexity of Lucia’s world.
This performance of Lucia di Lammermoor at Teatro Comunale Alighieri in Ravenna marked the third and final stop on the tour by the same team who first mounted the production at Teatro Pergolesi during the 45th Stagione Lirica di Tradizione. In Ravenna, the opera opened the Stagione d’Opera season, showcasing Svoboda’s iconic visual design in its most refined and fully realized form. As the culmination of the tour, the Ravenna staging not only preserved the core visual identity but also deepened its poetic and abstract qualities, bringing Svoboda’s scenographic vision and Brockhaus’ interpretive approach to a powerful artistic conclusion.
