SIMON BOCCANEGRA

In his portrayal of Paolo Albiani in Simon Boccanegra, Julian Kim embodied the character's transformation with striking nuance. At the outset, he appeared as a young man driven by ambition and political conviction—seemingly patriotic, aligned with Boccanegra’s rise. As the opera progressed, his performance revealed Paolo’s descent into darkness. Julian Kim’s subtly twitching lips, menacing facial expressions, and increasingly sinister vocal tone painted a chilling portrait of a man hiding his true intentions behind a mask of loyalty. His velvety baritone, praised for its rich darkness, carried a demonic undertone that intensified as Paolo’s schemes unfolded. Critics noted the complexity of his interpretation, drawing comparisons to Iago for its psychological depth and layered villainy. Few portrayals of Paolo capture both the political cunning and inner torment as compellingly as Julian Kim’s did in this production.

This performance was part of Teatro La Fenice’s production of Simon Boccanegra, the inaugural work opening its 2014/2015 season.

"Another young singer with, for me, the voice of the evening was the Korean bass Julian Kim, whose velvety tone and utter darkness of timbre made Paolo Albiani far more than the cut-out villain he can become."

Atmospheric Simon Boccanegra brings out the best of La Fenice

Bachtrack

"Julian Kim also delivered an excellent performance, with a well-rounded baritone voice, portraying a suitably malevolent Paolo Albiani, even adopting – without exaggeration – some demonic traits."

"Julian Kim is one of the rare Paolo Albianis able to show how the character is as complex as that of Iago in Otello."

"The young Julian Kim is starting to become a solid confirmation among the baritones of his generation: his voice has a beautiful tone, and his portrayal of the character Paolo is very intense—petty, opportunistic, and unscrupulous."

SIMON BOCCANEGRA, G. VERDI – GRAN TEATRO LA FENICE DI VENEZIA, inaugurazione stagione lirica, sabato 22 novembre 2014

MTG lirica

"The South Korean Julian Kim from Seoul delivers a strong Paolo Albiani, not only vocally—with his excellently articulated, striking, and completely secure high-register baritone—but also by powerfully emphasizing the villainous nature of his character. He has been working with Myung-Whun Chung for some time. Once again, through Kim, Koreans can prove what outstanding voices their country produces for opera. Incidentally, he has also performed as Donner in Wagner’s Rheingold in Seoul."
