LE NOZZE DI FIGARO
In April 2007, during his third year at the Conservatorio di Milano, Julian Kim (then credited as Kim Joo Taek) performed the role of Count Almaviva in Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro as part of an educational opera project. The production took place over three days, from April 9 to 11, at the Teatro di Locarno in Switzerland — an Italian and German-speaking region, making the trip abroad a memorable experience for the young cast and crew. Conducted by Demetrio Colaci, founder of the Laboratorio Opera-Studio at the Milan Conservatory, the staging was designed to introduce opera to new audiences through a thoughtfully guided educational format. While the role of the Count is written for baritone, the program listed Kim under the bass category, likely due to internal student classifications. His name appeared first among the cast, indicating his principal role. This performance marked one of Julian Kim’s earliest public appearances in a major Mozart role, and offered valuable international stage experience at a formative point in his training.
